EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print takes us back to the year 1935, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers with its rail and sea services to Scotland's picturesque Clyde Coast. The poster, skillfully crafted by artist Frank Henry Mason, showcases the stunning beauty of this coastal region. Mason's artistic prowess shines through as he captures the essence of Clyde Coast via Craigendoran. With a rich color palette and meticulous attention to detail, he transports viewers into a world where rugged cliffs meet serene waters. The LNER steamers glide gracefully across the sea, promising an unforgettable journey for those who choose this route. Born in 1876, Mason's deep connection with maritime life is evident in his work. Having been educated at HMS Conway and spending time at sea himself, he possessed an intimate understanding of marine subjects that translated seamlessly onto canvas. Not only was Mason a talented painter but also had expertise in engineering and shipbuilding – skills that undoubtedly influenced his ability to depict these scenes so authentically. His talent caught the eye of various railway companies who commissioned him to design posters promoting their services. Now preserved within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this timeless piece serves as a testament to both Mason's artistic brilliance and LNER's commitment to showcasing Scotland’s natural wonders. It invites us on a visual voyage through history while igniting our wanderlust for exploration along Europe’s enchanting coastlines.
