Cornish tin mining, 19th century
Cornish tin mining, 19th-century artwork. Miners working in a shaft in a tin mine in Cornwall, UK. Many such excavations were near the coast and extended out under the sea for nearly a kilometre. Some of the tunnels were only a few metres below the seabed. The mines employed hundreds of men, reaching depths of 400 metres. Thousands of tons of tin and copper were produced, but most had closed by the early 20th century. EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the essence of Cornish tin mining in all its historical glory. In this monochrome print, we witness a group of hardworking miners toiling away deep underground in a shaft within a tin mine located in Cornwall, UK. The mines were strategically positioned near the coast and ingeniously extended out under the sea for nearly a kilometre, with some tunnels mere meters below the seabed. Employing hundreds of men who descended to depths reaching an astonishing 400 meters, these mines were instrumental in producing thousands of tons of precious tin and copper during their heyday. However, by the early 20th century, most had ceased operations. The artwork showcases the remarkable technological advancements employed during this era as we observe miners ascending on ladders and scaffolding gantries that stretch into darkness above them. The image evokes both admiration for their bravery and awe at their industriousness. Originally featured in La Science Illustree, a popular French science weekly magazine from 1894, this illustration by Louis Figuier transports us back to an important period in European history when mining played a vital role in shaping local economies and communities. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing piece depicting Cornish tin mining's past triumphs and challenges, it serves as a poignant reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of progress through innovation and sheer determination.
