Diagnosis from urine, 16th century

16th century medicine. A guide to uroscopy, diagnosing a variety of medical conditions from the colour and clarity of the urine. The physician would use a special flask to collect the urine, then compare it with this chart in order to formulate a diagnosis. Although in many respects primitive and inaccurate, it was the only non-invasive form of diagnosis for many centuries. This woodcut comes from Epiphanie medicorum by Ulrich pinder, published in Nuremberg in 1506

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, immersing us in the world of primitive medicine. The image showcases a woodcut illustration from Ulrich Pinder's Epiphanie medicorum, published in Nuremberg in 1506. In this era, when medical knowledge was limited and invasive procedures were uncommon, physicians relied on uroscopy for diagnosis. The picture depicts a physician carefully collecting urine using a special flask. This non-invasive method allowed them to analyze the color and clarity of the urine to formulate diagnoses for various medical conditions. Although considered crude by today's standards, uroscopy was an invaluable tool during that time. The woodcut itself is beautifully crafted with intricate details, showcasing the skill of medieval artists. Its vertical composition adds depth and perspective to the scene while highlighting the importance placed on this diagnostic practice. As we gaze upon this historical artifact, it serves as a reminder of how far medicine has advanced over centuries. It sparks curiosity about our ancestors' understanding of health and their reliance on unconventional methods like uroscopy. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this piece from Science Photo Library, preserving its traditional essence while allowing us to appreciate its significance within medical history.
