Metal Print : Foot of jumping spider, SEM
Metal Prints from Science Photo Library
Foot of jumping spider, SEM
Foot of jumping spider. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the leg of a jumping spider (family Salticidae). In contrast to the 3-clawed foot of web-building spiders, this spiders foot has 2 claws and a pad of tufted hair (scopula, lower centre) that allows it to stick to a wide variety of surfaces. Jumping spiders use their excellent vision and jumping ability to hunt insects or spiders. Their jumping mechanism is not powered by their leg muscles; instead, muscle contraction in the front of their body causes the legs to extend by hydraulic pressure. Some jumping spiders mimic other species such as ants or beetles. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intricate foot of a jumping spider in stunning detail. The scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the unique features that enable this arachnid to navigate various surfaces with ease. Unlike web-building spiders, which possess three claws on their feet, this particular species from the Salticidae family boasts only two claws and a pad of tufted hair known as a scopula. The scopula, visible at the lower center of the image, acts as an adhesive mechanism for the spider, allowing it to stick effortlessly to different types of surfaces. With its exceptional vision and remarkable jumping ability, these spiders rely on their hydraulic leg extension rather than muscle power to propel themselves forward. This innovative adaptation is driven by muscle contractions in the front part of their bodies. Notably versatile hunters, jumping spiders utilize their impressive skills to capture insects or other spiders for sustenance. Some even adopt clever disguises by mimicking ants or beetles in order to deceive unsuspecting prey. This mesmerizing photograph not only showcases nature's incredible diversity but also highlights the fascinating world of arthropods and their extraordinary adaptations. Whether you are a lover of wildlife or simply intrigued by zoology, this vibrant print will undoubtedly captivate your imagination and spark curiosity about these agile creatures that roam our planet's ecosystems.
