Metal Print : Paris Observatory
Metal Prints from Science Photo Library
Paris Observatory
Paris Observatory under construction, with astronomers using a telescope, coloured artwork. This observatory, in Paris, France, was funded by King Louis XIV and built during the period 1667 to 1672. Its first director was the Italian astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625-1712), who came to Paris in 1669. Cassini quarrelled with the Observatorys architect, Claude Perrault, arguing for a more practical design. While working at the observatory, Cassini discovered four satellites of Saturn, and a division in Saturns rings. He also measured the distance to Mars, allowing the Earth-Sun distance to be calculated

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the essence of scientific discovery and architectural marvels in 17th century Paris. The print showcases the construction of the renowned Paris Observatory, a testament to King Louis XIV's patronage and vision. As astronomers diligently work with their telescopes, their figures come alive in vibrant colors against the backdrop of this historical masterpiece. At its helm was Giovanni Domenico Cassini, an Italian astronomer whose brilliance shone through his groundbreaking discoveries. Despite clashes with architect Claude Perrault over design choices, Cassini's practicality prevailed, resulting in a structure that would forever shape astronomical research. Within these walls, Cassini made extraordinary breakthroughs that transformed our understanding of celestial bodies. His keen eye unveiled four satellites orbiting Saturn and even revealed a division within its majestic rings. Moreover, by measuring Mars' distance from Earth with remarkable precision, he unlocked the key to calculating our planet's distance from the Sun. This illustration not only pays homage to these pioneering scientists but also transports us back to a time when knowledge was pursued amidst stunning architectural feats. It is a reminder of how human curiosity transcends borders and generations as we continue to explore the mysteries of our universe.
