Saint Christopher carrying Christ Child

St Christopher and Christ Child, coloured artwork after a 16th-century woodcut by the German artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). The woodcut, dated to 1525, shows Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a river. A hermit in the background is carrying a lamp. The date includes Durers identifying AD monogram. Much of Durers artwork depicted religious scenes, often as a series of pictures. He did much to introduce the Renaissance style of art to northern Europe. He travelled to Italy in 1494 and 1505, to study the new art. He was one of the first to study and use perspective, and his mathematical rigour meant his works were among the best of the time. Original woodcut from The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer (W. Kurth, 1936)
