Metal Print : William Hyde Wollaston, English chemist
Metal Prints from Science Photo Library
William Hyde Wollaston, English chemist
William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828), English chemist and discoverer of palladium and rhodium. In 1800, having given up a medical practice, Wollaston earned a living from the sale of platinum and was able to devote his time to studying chemistry and optics. While working with crude platinum ore he discovered the elements palladium (1802) and rhodium (1804). He also pioneered powder metallurgy, the use of heat and pressure to convert powders into metal articles. Wollaston made a number of contributions to science including a reflecting goniometer (for measuring crystal angles) and an improved microscope

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the brilliant mind of William Hyde Wollaston, an influential English chemist who left an indelible mark on the world of science. Born in 1766, Wollaston's insatiable curiosity led him to discover two remarkable elements - palladium in 1802 and rhodium in 1804 - while working with platinum ore. Wollaston's dedication to his craft was unwavering, as he abandoned a successful medical practice to pursue chemistry and optics full-time. His groundbreaking work extended beyond elemental discoveries; he also pioneered powder metallurgy, revolutionizing the conversion of powders into metal articles using heat and pressure. Not content with these achievements alone, Wollaston contributed significantly to scientific instrumentation by inventing a reflecting goniometer for measuring crystal angles and improving upon existing microscopes. This monochrome print captures the essence of this extraordinary man whose contributions continue to shape our understanding of chemistry today. With his piercing gaze and distinguished appearance, Wollaston stands as a testament to human ingenuity during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Although no longer among us since his passing in 1828 at age sixty-two, William Hyde Wollaston's legacy lives on through his pioneering spirit that forever altered the field of chemistry.
