George, the Prince of Wales (1762-1830), the future King George IV, 18th century (1912)

George, the Prince of Wales (1762-1830), the future King George IV, 18th century (1912). George IV was king of Great Britain and Ireland between 1820 and 1830. He had earlier served as Prince Regent when his father, King George III, suffered from a relapse into insanity from an illness that is now suspected to have been porphyria. The Regency, Georges nine-year tenure as Prince Regent, commenced in 1811 and ended with George IIIs death in 1820. It was marked by victory in the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. George IV is remembered largely for the extravagant lifestyle that he maintained as prince and monarch. From Imperial Cricket, edited by P F Warner and published by The London and Counties Press Association Ltd (London, 1912)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases George, the Prince of Wales (1762-1830), who would later become King George IV. The image captures him in the 18th century, during his youth and before he ascended to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland. George IV's reign as king lasted from 1820 until his death in 1830. However, prior to that, he served as Prince Regent when his father, King George III, fell into a state of insanity due to what is now believed to be porphyria. His nine-year tenure as Prince Regent began in 1811 and concluded with his father's passing. Notably, this period was marked by significant victories for Britain in the Napoleonic Wars across Europe. Yet it is George IV's extravagant lifestyle that remains etched in history - both during his time as prince and monarch. The photograph originates from "Imperial Cricket" an edited publication released by The London and Counties Press Association Ltd back in 1912. It portrays a young boy holding a cricket bat against a backdrop reminiscent of eighteenth-century England. As we gaze upon this monochrome portrait captured by an unknown creator but preserved through time, we catch a glimpse into the life of one who would eventually hold immense power within the House of Hanover. This image serves as a reminder not only of royalty but also of sportive pastimes enjoyed by people throughout history.
