EDITORS COMMENTS
Piranhurst," the Italianate villa at 371 Cold Spring Road in Montecito, California, was built for Henry Ernest Bothin between 1914 and 1917, under the architectural guidance of F. Garvin Hudson. The property, which Bothin purchased from Daniel E. Richardson in 1910, originally belonged to Joseph J. Whipple and James Wilkinson Elliott, who developed the land between 1901 and 1910. The landscape design of the 25-acre estate was a collaborative effort between Robert Armstrong, Daniel E. Richardson, and the Bothins. The stunning image, captured by renowned photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1917, showcases the grandeur of Piranhurst. The house is surrounded by lush greenery, with cypress trees standing tall and proud. The garden, filled with vibrant plants and flowers, adds to the property's natural beauty. The hand-tinted lantern slide reveals the presence of a sun dial, a classic element of Italianate villa design, which further accentuates the estate's elegant charm. The Bothins, specifically Lottie Whittier (Mrs. Henry E.) Bothin, are associated with this magnificent property. The image, taken during the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the American lifestyle during this era. The Piranhurst estate, with its rich history and stunning architecture, continues to be an enduring symbol of California's heritage and the beauty of the United States. This hand-colored photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston for the Library of Congress, is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the early 20th century. The image, which captures the essence of nature, architecture, and design, remains a cherished piece of American history.
