Taking the (Irish) Bull by the Horns, 1870. Artist: Joseph Swain
Taking the (Irish) Bull by the Horns, 1870. Mr Gladstone, the Liberal Prime Minister, takes the Irish bull by the horns. The particular issue illustrated by this cartoon is the Irish Land Bill which Gladstone had introduced to the Commons in mid February 1980. Its principal aims were to provide compensation for evicted tenants, with restraint on evictions and the establishment of courts of arbitration. Naturally, the interests of the landlords and the tenants would be in opposition, an opposition that long been the basis of much unrest in Ireland. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 26, 1870

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Taking the (Irish) Bull by the Horns, 1870" we witness a powerful political statement made through art. Created by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this piece features William Ewart Gladstone, the Liberal Prime Minister of Britain during the late 19th century. With great determination and courage, Gladstone takes on the formidable Irish bull head-on. The focal point of this cartoon is the contentious Irish Land Bill that Gladstone introduced to Parliament in February 1870. This legislation aimed to address long-standing issues between landlords and tenants in Ireland by providing compensation for evicted tenants and establishing courts of arbitration to mediate disputes. The opposing interests of landlords and tenants had fueled unrest in Ireland for years. Through clever satire and engraving techniques, Swain skillfully captures both the gravity of this political issue and Gladstone's bold stance as he confronts it directly. The monochrome black-and-white composition adds depth to the image while emphasizing its historical significance. This print serves as a testament to Gladstone's statesmanship, his dedication to resolving complex social problems, and his willingness to face difficult challenges head-on. It stands as a reminder of an important chapter in British history when leaders like Gladstone took decisive action towards creating a more just society for all citizens.
