Flocky Maucauco, also known as the Woolly Lemur or Indri Lemur (Lemur laniger), is depicted in this exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving from The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Complete Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature, published by Harrison in London between 1798 and 1802. This rare and intricately detailed illustration showcases the distinctive features of this unique primate native to Madagascar. The Indri Lemur, with its piercing, expressive eyes, is the largest species of lemur, and is easily recognizable by its thick, woolly coat, long bushy tail, and distinctive ear tufts. The Indri's large, round ears are used for both communication and temperature regulation. They are also excellent jumpers, able to leap up to 30 feet between trees. This illustration is believed to have been inspired by the observations and sketches of Pierre Sonnerat, a French naturalist who traveled extensively in the Indian Ocean region during the late 18th century. Sonnerat's detailed accounts and illustrations of the natural history of Madagascar were widely disseminated through publications such as The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine. The handcoloring of this engraving adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, bringing the woolly lemur to life in a way that is both captivating and educational.
