EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Gavin Campbell, the 7th Earl of Breadalbane (1851-?) in his regal attire as a Scottish peer. The Earl, whose full name was Gavin Sholto Douglas Campbell, 7th Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, was a prominent figure in Scottish society during the late 19th century. Born into the noble Campbell family, one of the oldest and most influential in Scotland, Gavin Earl of Breadalbane inherited the title and estates at a young age following the death of his father. The Earl's ancestral seat was Blair Castle in Perthshire, a grand and historic residence that has been in the Campbell family for over 700 years. The Earl's appearance in this portrait conveys a sense of authority and dignity befitting his noble status. He wears the traditional Scottish bonnet, known as a "feilidh mòr," which was a symbol of his high rank. The intricate gold brooch pinned to his bonnet, known as a "brooch of gorm," is a family heirloom that dates back to the 13th century. Gavin Earl of Breadalbane was an active participant in Scottish society and was known for his patronage of the arts and his support of local industries. He was also a generous benefactor to the people of his estate, providing employment opportunities and charitable assistance to those in need. Despite his noble title and wealth, the Earl was known for his humility and approachability. He was well-respected by his peers and the people of his community, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in Scotland today as a symbol of Scottish heritage and tradition.
