EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork depicts the Kea, Nestor notabilis, the only alpine parrot in the world. Painted by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans for Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," this illustration was published in Volume 2, Plate 18, in 1888. The Kea is native to New Zealand and is a member of the Strigopidae family, which also includes the Kakapo and the Kaka. The Kea is characterized by its distinctive green and blue-grey plumage, with a yellow beak and legs. It is a highly intelligent and curious bird, known for its ability to use tools and solve complex problems. The Kea's diet consists mainly of vegetation, but it will also eat insects and small vertebrates. The Kea was once common throughout the alpine and subalpine regions of New Zealand, but its population has declined significantly due to habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and human disturbance. Today, the Kea is considered an endangered species, with an estimated population of only a few thousand individuals. This beautiful watercolor painting not only showcases the physical beauty of the Kea but also serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving this unique and fascinating bird for future generations. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the Kea to life, making it a true masterpiece of natural history illustration.
