EDITORS COMMENTS
Los Caprichos," a series of 80 etchings and aquatints created by Spanish painter and printmaker Francisco de Goya between 1797 and 1799, offer a scathing critique of Spanish society during the late 18th century. This particular print, number 52 titled "What can a tailor!" or "Lo que puede un sastre!," showcases Goya's mastery of irony and sarcasm. In this image, a tailor, dressed in the traditional Spanish attire, is depicted with a devilish expression on his face as he holds a pair of scissors, poised to cut the legs off a man lying on a table. The man's terrified expression and the ominous shadow cast by the tailor add to the sense of unease and foreboding. The title of the print suggests that the tailor has the power to alter people's lives in unexpected ways, perhaps even to harm them. Goya's use of aquatint, a labor-intensive printmaking technique that allows for a wide range of tonal values, adds depth and texture to the image. The dark, moody background contrasts sharply with the bright, almost glowing whites of the man's skin and the tailor's apron, creating a striking visual effect. The print is a testament to Goya's contemporary relevance and his ability to comment on the human condition in a way that continues to resonate with audiences today. The irony and sarcasm in "What can a tailor!" serve as a reminder that appearances can be deceiving and that power and control are not always what they seem. The print also highlights the superstitions and fears that permeated Spanish society during the late 18th century, offering a glimpse into the complex and often contradictory world of the past. This reproduction of "What can a tailor!" by M. Segui i Riera is a beautiful and faithful representation of Goya's original work, allowing modern viewers to appreciate the artist's mastery of technique and his keen insight into the human condition.
