EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts the coastal dwellers of the island of Papua, now known as New Guinea, in the South Pacific. The image is taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen around 1835-1840. The natives are shown wearing traditional attire and adornments, with intricately designed body scarifications and elaborate haircombs. The men are depicted wearing loincloths made of bark cloth, while the women wear skirts made of banana fibers. The people of this region, located on the northeastern tip of the island, are known for their distinctive cultural practices. The island of Papua, the eastern half of the New Guinea, is the largest island east of the Bismarck Sea and is home to over 800 distinct ethnic groups. The coastal dwellers are known for their expertise in fishing, agriculture, and the cultivation of sago palms. The rawakisland, where this image was likely taken, is located in the Waigeo region of the Bird's Head Peninsula. This lithograph is an important historical record of the people and customs of Papua New Guinea during the early 19th century. Ethnographers and anthropologists have long been drawn to the rich cultural heritage of this region, and this image offers a glimpse into the lives of the coastal dwellers before the influence of European contact. The intricate details of the body scarifications and hairstyles, as well as the use of traditional tools and clothing, provide valuable insights into the cultural practices and traditions of this fascinating part of the world.
