EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases two captivating species of butterflies: the Gold Rim Swallowtail, Battus polydamas 1, 2, and the Red Ring Skirt, Hestina assimilis 3, 4. The Gold Rim Swallowtail, also known as the Blue Mormon or the Blue Swallowtail, is a large and vibrant butterfly native to Africa and Asia. The males are characterized by their iridescent blue uppersides with golden edges on the forewings and hindwings, while the females exhibit a more subdued orange-brown coloration. The intricate details of their wings are beautifully captured in this lithograph, with each vein and scale meticulously rendered. The Red Ring Skirt, also known as the Red Ring or the Red-ringed Swallowtail, is a smaller butterfly native to Africa. The males are easily identified by their bright red rings on the hindwings, while the females have a more muted orange-brown coloration with black spots. The lithograph provides a detailed view of both the ventral and dorsal aspects of these fascinating insects, allowing us to appreciate their unique beauty in all its complexity. The exquisite detail and vibrant colors of this lithograph are a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrators and printers of the time. The 19th century was a golden age for the study and documentation of exotic species, and this lithograph is a prime example of the remarkable achievements of that era. The illustrations of the Gold Rim Swallowtail and Red Ring Skirt serve not only as scientific records but also as works of art, showcasing the natural world in all its splendor.
