EDITORS COMMENTS
Strophanthus gratus, also known as Roupellia grata, is a tropical plant native to Central and West Africa. This stunning woodcut print, created by A.E. Smith after an illustration by Gardchron for Jean Linden's Illustration Horticole in Brussels in 1888, showcases the beauty and intricacy of this exotic plant. The Strophanthus gratus is a shrub or small tree that can grow up to 3 meters tall. Its glossy, green foliage is composed of ovate-elliptic leaves with a serrated margin. The plant produces white or pinkish flowers, which bloom in clusters. However, the Strophanthus gratus is perhaps best known for its potent toxin, ouabain, which is extracted from the plant's seeds. Ouabain is a powerful cardiac glycoside that has been used traditionally as an arrow poison and a heart stimulant. It was also the first discovered cardiac glycoside and has been used in modern medicine for the treatment of heart failure. Despite its toxic properties, the Strophanthus gratus remains a fascinating and beautiful plant, with its intricate foliage and exotic origins. This woodcut print captures its essence perfectly, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the tropical world.
