This early 20th century print showcases two beloved nursery rhyme illustrations: Jack and Jill falling down the hill and Little Polly Flinders sitting among the cinders. In the top illustration, we find ourselves in the midst of the classic tale of Jack and Jill. With their pails in hand, the two children are shown precariously perched on a hill, reaching for a pail of water from a distant well. As they both lean in for a better grasp, the illustration captures the moment before their inevitable fall. The pails clatter to the ground, and Jack and Jill tumble after, their faces etched with surprise and dismay. Beneath this scene, we encounter the enchanting image of Little Polly Flinders. Seated among the cinders, she appears content as she tends to a fireplace. A kettle rests atop the grate, and the warm glow of the fire illuminates her face. However, the danger lurking in the scene is evident: the woman in the background is reaching for a pair of tongs, her expression one of concern as she watches Polly's proximity to the hot coals and smoking fire.
