EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Sud-Aviation Caravelle VII F-BJAO, also known as "Caravelle Santa Maria." This Caravelle Series III aircraft (msn 042) was a significant milestone in aviation history as it was purchased by General Electric for the purpose of testing their new CJ805 aft-fan engines. With this modification, the Caravelle became the engine test-bed for the Super Caravelle 10A. Flight tests with the new engines commenced on December 29, 1960, and a second aircraft was planned to be converted for further testing. However, F-BJAO remained the sole Caravelle 10A. After extensive testing in France and the United States, as well as a global sales tour, the aircraft reverted to Caravelle III standard, powered by Rolls-Royce Avon engines. In 1961, the aircraft was delivered to Air France, where it was registered as F-BLKF. This photograph captures a moment in aviation history, showcasing the Caravelle Santa Maria as a pivotal figure in the development and testing of advanced engine technology. [End of Caption]
