EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases two iconic aircraft of the United States military and NASA from the early 1960s. In the foreground, a USAF Boeing KC-97G-24-BO Stratofreighter with the serial number 52-2632 (msn 16663) is prominently displayed. Originally built as a military transport aircraft, this KC-97 was later converted to a C-97G and named "City of Prescott" with the 197th Military Airlift Squadron of the Arizona Air National Guard in May 1972. It was later transferred to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) with the designation CH528 on June 28, 1972. In the background, a Douglas F5D-1 Skylancer of NASA with the BuNo 139208 can be seen. The Skylancer was a two-seat, twin-engine research aircraft used by NASA for various scientific investigations. Although the exact relationship between these two aircraft in this photograph is unknown, it is a fascinating reminder of the rich aviation history of the United States military and NASA during the mid-20th century.
