EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the United States Air Force's (USAF) North American F-86D Sabre jet fighter, serial number 50-0496, also known as "FU-496," during the 1950s era. The F-86D Sabre, a single-engine, all-weather tactical fighter, was an advanced version of the renowned Sabre series, which became famous for its combat successes during the Korean War. In this image, the F-86D Sabre is stationed at an airbase, with the distinctive fuselage of a Boeing B-50A Superfortress, serial number 46-0010, visible in the background. Known previously as "Lucky Lady II," this B-50A holds historical significance as the aircraft that completed the first non-stop around-the-world flight in early 1949. Unfortunately, on August 13, 1950, the plane, now named "Kensmen," suffered an engine failure and crashed southeast of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson. Despite the accident, the fuselage was salvaged and used as a recruiting exhibit. The F-86D Sabre in the foreground underwent conversion to a TF-86D trainer model in 1956. It was later assigned to the USAF 4750th Air Defense Wing. The combination of these two iconic aircraft in one frame highlights the rich history and evolution of military aviation during the 1950s.
