Plate 285 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," showcases three remarkable waterbirds: the Xema sabini, or Sabine's Gull, the Calidris alba, or Sanderling, and the Larus sabini, or Sabine's Gull. This exquisite hand-coloured aquatint print, engraved and printed by R. Havell (& Son) of London, captures the intricate details and vibrant plumage of these birds in stunning detail. The Sabine's Gull, depicted in the center, is a medium-sized gull with a distinctive black "collar" around its neck. Its plumage is predominantly white, with black wingtips and a gray back. The Sabine's Gull is named after the Sabine brothers, naturalists J.L. and J.F. Sabin, who first described the species. To the left of the Sabine's Gull is the Sanderling, a small, plump shorebird with a barred belly and a short, straight bill. The Sanderling is a member of the sandpiper family and is known for its distinctive "sewing machine" running gait as it forages along the shoreline. The rocky shoreline setting of the print adds to the overall sense of realism and immersion, with the birds depicted in their natural habitat during daytime hours. The Sauropsida, a group of reptiles and birds, is represented here by these three avian species, which belong to the Charadriiformes order and the Laridae and Scolopacidae families. The intricacy of the aquatint technique is evident in the detailed textures of the birds' plumage and the subtle shading that brings the rocky shoreline to life.
