Throwing hot pennies to children at Honiton Fair Devon. The Hot Pennies ceremony takes

Throwing hot pennies to children at Honiton Fair Devon. The Hot Pennies ceremony takes place annually on the first Tuesday after 19 July in the High Street of the town, and dates back to the 13th Century. The ceremony has its roots in the practice of landed gentry taking pleasure in throwing hot pennies from windows to local peasants, a seemingly philanthropic gesture resulting in burns. The custom also had the purpose of encouraging people to travel to the town from the surrounding area to attend a subsequent fair. 20th July 1943 P029149

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of tradition and excitement at the Honiton Fair in Devon. The image showcases a large group of children eagerly reaching out to catch hot pennies being thrown from above. The Hot Pennies ceremony, which dates back to the 13th Century, takes place annually on the first Tuesday after 19 July in the town's High Street. The origins of this unique custom are rooted in a practice where wealthy landowners would delight in tossing hot pennies to local peasants from their windows. While seemingly philanthropic, this act often resulted in burns for those trying to collect the coins. Additionally, it served as an incentive for people from surrounding areas to travel to Honiton and attend the subsequent fair. In this snapshot taken on 20th July 1943 during World War II, we can see children joyfully participating despite the challenging times. The presence of the mayor and a pub called "The Kings Arms" adds historical context and highlights how deeply ingrained these traditions were within society. This print by W. J Boyland offers us a glimpse into childhood memories and customs that have stood the test of time. It reminds us of our shared history while also capturing moments filled with innocence, anticipation, and community spirit.
