The rings of Saturn, artwork
The rings of Saturn. Artwork of the view from inside one of the rings of Saturn. The presence of rings around Saturn was first inferred by the astronomer Huygens in 1659. They are composed mainly of water ice, but also include some rocky particles and bodies. Although the origin of the rings is unknown, they are an unstable system and, unless regenerated with material, may not last more than a few hundred million years. The rings are only a kilometre thick, but extend outwards for 120, 000 kilometres
