The guns were sent in from elsewhere, but the manufacture of 40 large field carriages upon which the guns were mounted was a specialist project that demanded a high standard of machining by skilled staff. This project was allocated to the GWR by the Ministry of Munitions. It is not surprising therefore that the completed mounted guns were proudly displayed outside the General Offices and photographed by the Company

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive display of 6-inch naval guns on Macaw B wagons at Swindon Works, circa 1915. These powerful weapons were not manufactured on-site but were sent in from elsewhere, highlighting their significance during World War I. However, what truly stands out is the remarkable craftsmanship involved in creating the 40 large field carriages upon which these guns were mounted. The Ministry of Munitions entrusted this specialized project to the skilled staff at GWR (Great Western Railway), demanding a high standard of machining. The completion of these mounted guns was an achievement worth celebrating, as evidenced by their proud exhibition outside the General Offices. It comes as no surprise that such a momentous occasion was captured through photography. In this snapshot frozen in time, one can't help but marvel at both the sheer size and intricate details of these naval guns. They serve as a reminder of the immense efforts made during wartime to ensure national security and defense. This image encapsulates not only a significant chapter in history but also pays tribute to those who dedicated their expertise and labor towards supporting their country's war efforts. Displayed within STEAM Museum of GWR, this photograph offers viewers a glimpse into an era where innovation met necessity amidst global conflict—a testament to human resilience and ingenuity in times of adversity.
