EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the vibrant 1950s, where British Railways (BR) sought to entice travelers to visit the enchanting city of London. Created by the talented artist Gordon Nicoll, this poster was part of a series designed to promote rail services and showcase the beauty of London. Nicoll's artistic prowess is evident in this stunning artwork, which captures the essence of London's iconic landmarks. The focal point of the image is Buckingham Palace, with its majestic presence standing proudly along The Mall. As we gaze upon this scene, our eyes are drawn towards a group of elegantly adorned horses trotting gracefully down the street. The artist's use of watercolors and oils adds depth and vibrancy to every brushstroke, creating an atmosphere that transports us straight into bustling 1950s London. This nostalgic piece not only highlights Nicoll's talent but also serves as a testament to his ability to capture both architectural grandeur and natural beauty. As we admire this vintage print from National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, it reminds us of a time when rail travel was at its peak and exploring new destinations was filled with excitement. It invites us on a journey through history while igniting our wanderlust for all that London has to offer – from its regal palaces to its charming streetscapes.
