EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elegance and grandeur of an English noble from the 16th century. The subject, depicted in a woodcut by Cesare Vecellio, is brought to life through the meticulous hand coloring by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithography by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie. Dressed in a regal purple-grey damask coat lined with luxurious fur, this noble exudes opulence and sophistication. His scarlet belt adds a vibrant pop of color that complements his ensemble perfectly. Adorning his neck is a pristine white ruff that frames his face with an air of refinement. Completing his attire is a black hat perched atop his head, adding an element of mystery to his persona. With every detail meticulously captured in this illustration from Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" we are transported back in time to witness the fashion trends of this era. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's artistic talent shines through as he expertly brings out the richness and depth of colors in this image. As an artist renowned for his work as both a book illustrator and interior designer for public buildings and churches, Lechevallier-Chevignard's attention to detail is evident here. This print serves as not only a visual delight but also as a historical reference to the sartorial choices prevalent among English nobility during the 16th century. It stands as testament to their refined taste and unwavering commitment to style even centuries later.
