EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Russian local photographer V.V. Lanin between 1865 and 1871, showcases two Gilyak people from Langer ulus. The image is part of an album containing 154 photographs presented to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg by merchant V.P. Myl'nikov upon his return from the Amur region. The Gilyaks, also known as the Nivkh people, are an indigenous ethnic group inhabiting the Russian Far East, primarily living along the Amur, Ussuri, and Suifun Rivers. This photograph offers a rare and intimate glimpse into their lives during the 19th century. The man and woman in the photograph are dressed in traditional clothing, with the woman wearing a long, colorful robe and the man wearing a fur coat. They stand facing the camera, making direct eye contact, and their expressions convey a sense of pride and confidence. The man protectively places his arm around the woman, indicating a close bond between them. This photograph is an essential contribution to the ethnographic and anthropological records of the time, providing valuable insights into the lives of the Gilyak people and their culture.
