EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait, painted by the Flemish artist Justus Sustana (Giusto Sustermans) between 1635 and 1640, depicts Vittoria della Rovere (1622-1694), an Italian noblewoman and the last Duchess of Urbino. The portrait was created during a significant period in Vittoria's life, as she was then engaged to Ferdinand II de' Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. Born in Florence, Sustermans was a prominent painter of the Baroque period, renowned for his elegant and sophisticated portraits. In this painting, he masterfully captures the grace and beauty of Vittoria, who is depicted wearing an intricately embroidered gown and a pearl-encrusted headdress. Her expressive eyes and delicate features convey a sense of intelligence and poise, reflecting her noble lineage and refined upbringing. The portrait was once part of the esteemed collection of the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, Italy. It is a testament to the artistic and cultural exchanges that took place between Italy and the Northern European countries during the 17th century. The painting's rich colors and meticulous details showcase Sustermans' exceptional skill as a painter and his ability to capture the essence of his subject. Vittoria's engagement to Ferdinand II de' Medici was a politically strategic union, as the Medici family sought to strengthen their position in Tuscany and the wider Italian peninsula. The marriage took place in 1642, and Vittoria became the Grand Duchess of Tuscany. The portrait thus serves as a visual record of this important moment in Italian history and the lives of two prominent figures of the time.
