The Princess of Wales Welcoming her Sailor Sons on their Return. . . May 3,1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photograph, we witness a heartfelt moment between the future Queen Alexandra of Denmark and her two eldest sons, Prince Albert Victor and George. The year is 1880, and the princess stands proudly on the deck of HMS Bacchante as she embraces her sailor sons upon their return from a three-year cruise. Princess Alexandra's love for her boys radiates through the image as she holds them close to her heart. Her maternal affection is evident in every detail - from the tender kiss planted on one son's cheek to the warm embrace shared with the other. It is a testament to the unbreakable bond between mother and child. Prince Albert Victor tragically succumbed to influenza at a young age, leaving behind an indelible mark on his family's hearts. His brother George would go on to succeed his father as King in 1910, becoming known as King George V. This poignant snapshot captures not only a personal moment within this royal family but also represents an era defined by naval warfare and British pride. The image serves as a reminder of duty fulfilled by these young midshipmen during their time onboard HMS Bacchante. Preserved within "The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria" this historical treasure offers us glimpses into both personal lives and grand narratives that shaped our past.
