The Thames Embankment and Somerset House, London, c1915. Creator: Unknown
The Thames Embankment and Somerset House, London, c1915. First built for Lord Protector Somerset in 1547-1550, Somerset House was the first Renaissance palace in England. It was substantially rebuilt to designs by Sir William Chambers in the late 18th century, at which time the Thames flowed up to the palaces frontage. Somerset House was the home of many royal societies in the 18th and 19th centuries. From 1836-1973 it housed the offices of the General Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages. The Embankment was designed by the civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette to accommodate his new sewer system and to provide a thoroughfare alongside the River Thames. Postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic beauty of The Thames Embankment and Somerset House in London, circa 1915. The image captures a moment frozen in time, revealing the grandeur of this historic landmark. Somerset House, originally built for Lord Protector Somerset in the mid-16th century, stands proudly as England's first Renaissance palace. The photograph highlights the architectural brilliance of Sir William Chambers' late 18th-century redesign, which transformed Somerset House into a neo-classical masterpiece. In those days, the flowing waters of the River Thames reached right up to its frontage before Joseph Bazalgette's ingenious creation of The Embankment. Somerset House served as home to numerous royal societies during the 18th and 19th centuries. From 1836 until 1973, it housed the offices of the General Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages—a testament to its historical significance. The hand-colored postcard evokes a sense of nostalgia with its vibrant hues and meticulous attention to detail.
