The Workmens Train, 1872

The Workmens Train, 1872. This picture shows steam trains at Gower Street station on the Metropolitan (underground) railway which opened in 1863. Workers hurry to catch their morning train to work. From London: A Pilgrimage by Gustave Dore and Blanchard Jerrold. (London, 1872). A Pilgrimage was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Dore had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Workmens Train, 1872" takes us back to a bustling era in London's history. The image captures the essence of Victorian England as workers hurriedly gather on the platform at Gower Street station, eagerly awaiting their morning train to work. The steam locomotives stand tall, ready to transport these hardworking men on their daily commute. Taken from the book "London: A Pilgrimage" by Gustave Dore and Blanchard Jerrold, this wood engraving offers a glimpse into the transportation system of the time. While it received commercial success, critics were divided due to its focus on depicting poverty in London. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness not just a means of transportation but also a reflection of society itself. These commuters represent the working class who formed the backbone of industrialized Britain during the 19th century. Their determination and resilience are palpable as they navigate through rush hour chaos. As we delve into this monochrome masterpiece, we can't help but appreciate how far our modern commuting experience has come since then. This print serves as a reminder of our shared heritage and pays homage to those who paved the way for today's efficient transport systems.
