Second Severn Crossing, M4 Motorway, New Passage, Pilning and Severn Beach, South Gloucestershire. A view from the top of a bridge pylon during the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, showing a space at the centre awaiting a deck unit to make the link between the two halves of the bridge.
The Second Severn Crossing took four years to build and was a joint civil engineering project between Laing Civil Engineering and the French company GTM. The work started in April 1992 and the opening ceremony later took place on 5th June 1996. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment during the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, showcasing the joining of deck units. Taken from atop a bridge pylon, the image reveals an empty space at the center, eagerly awaiting a deck unit to connect both halves of this monumental structure. The Second Severn Crossing was an impressive feat of engineering that took four years to complete. A collaborative effort between Laing Civil Engineering and French company GTM, construction began in April 1992 and culminated in a grand opening ceremony on June 5th, 1996. Spanning over 5000 meters across the River Severn, three miles downstream from its predecessor - the iconic Severn Bridge - this cable-stayed bridge stands as a testament to human ingenuity. Intriguingly captured within this photograph is not just a snapshot of progress but also a glimpse into history. The image transports us back to the vibrant era of the 1990s when infrastructure development was booming. It serves as a reminder that bridges are more than mere physical connections; they symbolize growth, unity, and progress. Preserved by Historic England Archive for future generations to admire and learn from, this print showcases not only technical prowess but also highlights how collaboration can transcend borders. As we gaze upon it today, we appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and its representation of human achievement in shaping our ever-evolving landscape.
