EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the distinguished visage of Alexander Russel, an influential figure in Scottish journalism during the 19th century. Born in Edinburgh on October 23, 1814, Russel would go on to make a significant impact on the world of Scottish journalism as the editor of The Scotsman newspaper. The Scotsman, which was first published in 1817, was then in its infancy when Russel took the helm in 1843. Under his leadership, the paper grew in both influence and circulation, becoming a respected voice in Scottish politics and society. Russel's editorial stance was characterized by his commitment to liberal values and his unwavering support for Scottish nationalism. This period was marked by significant political and social change in Scotland, with the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 and the passage of the Reform Act in 1867, which extended the franchise to a larger segment of the population. Russel's editorials played a crucial role in shaping public opinion on these issues, and his influence extended beyond Scotland's borders. Despite his political activism, Russel remained a dedicated family man. He married Jane Cockburn in 1842, and together they had five children. The family resided in Edinburgh's New Town, where Russel continued to edit The Scotsman until his retirement in 1876. This portrait, taken in the mid-19th century, captures Russel in the prime of his career. His piercing gaze and serious expression convey a sense of determination and focus, reflecting the unwavering commitment he brought to his role as editor of The Scotsman. The portrait serves as a testament to Russel's enduring legacy as a pioneering figure in Scottish journalism and a champion of liberal values.
