EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and evocative portrait, Anne Liddell, daughter of Henry Lord Ravensworth, is depicted in the prime of her life. The painting, which dates from around the turn of the 19th century, captures the beauty and refinement of Anne as she looks out at the viewer with a confident and poised expression. Anne's first marriage was to Augustus Henry FitzRoy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, a prominent figure in British politics and society. Their union was short-lived, however, as the duke sought an annulment in 1769 on the grounds of consanguinity, or close familial relationship. The divorce was a scandal at the time and caused a great stir in high society. Following her divorce from the duke, Anne married John Fitzpatrick, 2nd Earl of Upper Ossory, a wealthy Irish nobleman. The couple's marriage brought them great happiness and they had several children together. Anne's second husband was known for his generosity and patronage of the arts, and the couple lived in style at their estate in County Kildare, Ireland. Tragically, Anne's life was cut short when she passed away in 1804 at the age of 55. This portrait, which captures her in her youth and beauty, serves as a poignant reminder of her fascinating and complex history. Anne Liddell's story is a testament to the intricacies of 18th-century British and Irish society, and the enduring power of love and resilience in the face of adversity.
