EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the awe-inspiring presence of the Strasbourg Statue in Basel, Switzerland. The statue, created by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi in 1895, stands proudly at the Centralbahnplatz in Basel. The statue was a gift from the French Baron Herve de Gruyer, in appreciation of the humanitarian aid and assistance provided by the Swiss people during the Franco-Prussian War. In 1870 and 1871, when the city of Strasbourg was besieged, 1,400 non-combatants, including women, children, and the elderly, were evacuated to Switzerland under the guidance of Swiss officials. The statue, therefore, serves as a poignant reminder of the compassion and solidarity shown during a time of conflict. The historical significance of this statue is further emphasized by its intricate details and the serene expression on the statue's face. This photograph, taken circa 1908, is a testament to the enduring power of human kindness and the importance of international cooperation.
