The Strasbourg statue in Basel at the Centralbahnplatz. Created by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi in 1895, the statue was donated by the French Baron Herve de Gruyer, in appreciation of Swiss aid received during the Franco-German war, when 1, 400 women, children and old people (non-combatants) from the besieged city were evacuated to Switzerland by Swiss officials. Date: circa 1908

The statue was a gift from the French Baron Herve de Gruyer, in appreciation of the humanitarian aid and assistance provided by the Swiss people during the Franco-Prussian War. In 1870 and 1871, when the city of Strasbourg was besieged, 1,400 non-combatants, including women, children, and the elderly, were evacuated to Switzerland under the guidance of Swiss officials.
