EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the young and brave spirit of Cicely and Winifred Mordaunt, the youngest daughters of Sir Charles Mordaunt, 10th Baronet, and his wife Mary Louise Cholmondeley of Walton Hall, Warwick. The sisters made history during the First World War by actively contributing to the war effort. Winifred Mordaunt is confirmed to have been a dedicated member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANYs), an all-female volunteer auxiliary military unit, which provided administrative, transport, and nursing support to the British military. Her bravery was recognized with the prestigious Croix de Guerre, a French military decoration awarded for gallant conduct during an air raid. The French Army orders stated that Miss Winifred Mordaunt "showed an absolute disregard of danger." Cicely Mordaunt, on the other hand, also demonstrated remarkable courage and dedication during the war. She was awarded the Order of Elizabeth for her excellent work during an epidemic of typhoid. The sisters' upper-class background did not deter them from serving their country and making a difference during the Great War. Their portraits serve as a powerful reminder of the important role women played in the war effort and their unwavering bravery in the face of adversity. This photograph, taken in 1918, is a testament to their inspiring story and the historical significance of their contributions.
