EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the noble and resolute visage of Alexander Leslie, the First Earl of Leven. Born in Scotland in 1580, Leslie's military career began in continental Europe, where he served with distinction in various armies until the outbreak of the English Civil War. As a committed Covenanter, Leslie played a pivotal role in the Scottish uprising against the English monarchy and its episcopalian church. In 1639, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Scottish Army, leading his forces to a series of victories against the English during the Bishops' Wars. Despite his military successes, Leslie's tenure as Commander-in-Chief was not without controversy. His strict adherence to the Covenant and his refusal to compromise with the English led to tensions within the Scottish camp. Nevertheless, his unwavering commitment to the cause earned him the respect and loyalty of his troops. After the Scottish victory at the Battle of Newburn in 1639, Leslie played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Berwick, which granted Scotland significant concessions from the English. However, the fragile peace was short-lived, and Leslie was once again called upon to lead the Scottish forces in the Civil War. Tragically, Leslie's health began to fail him during the war, and he was forced to retire from military service in 1646. He died in Edinburgh in 1661, leaving behind a legacy as one of Scotland's most accomplished military commanders and a tireless champion of the Covenant. This portrait, with its solemn expression and intricate detail, serves as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the defense of his country and its religious beliefs.
