EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Karut, Croaker, Johnius carutta, Black Drum, Pogonias cromis, Fasce," is a beautiful example of the naturalistic illustrations found in Jean Gabriel Pretre's contributions to Jussieu's "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published between 1816 and 1830. Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History, collaborated with skilled engravers such as Massard and Turpin to produce these exquisite works. The illustration depicts three distinct species of fish: the Karut or Spotted Croaker (Johnius carutta), the Black Drum (Pogonias cromis), and the Fasce or Black-striped Drum (Pogonias fasciata). The Karut, a common coastal fish, is shown with its distinctive spotted pattern and large, protruding mouth. The Black Drum, a popular game fish, is illustrated with its elongated body and distinctive black stripes. The Fasce, also known as the Black-striped Drum, is depicted with its large, flat head and dark, vertical stripes. The intricate detail and lifelike quality of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of Pretre and his collaborators. The use of handcoloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the illustration, making it a valuable historical record of these fish species and a true work of art in its own right.
