EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the poignant moment during the KFOR invasion of Kosovo in 1999, as refugees huddle together at the Stenkovich camp, just inside the Macedonian border. The camp, which had become a temporary home for thousands displaced by the conflict, is shown in the background, with makeshift shelters and tents visible amongst the trees. In the foreground, a column of armored vehicles from the Kosovo Force (KFOR) passes by, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the refugees as they prepared to cross into Kosovo and begin the journey towards safety and security. Taken by Sgt David John Miles, a reservist who volunteered to serve with 4 Armoured Brigade as their photographer, this photograph is one of 48 color images in his collection documenting the events of the Kosovo conflict. The photograph was taken under the direction of Media Operations in Kosovo and is part of a larger exhibition, "Kosovo - a personal view," which was displayed at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery in 2000. The collection provides a unique and personal insight into the experiences of those involved in the conflict, both military personnel and civilians alike.
