EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored botanical engraving showcases two common weeds of the European countryside: the Lanc d Gentle Thistle (Cirsium vulgare) and the Burdock (Arctium lappa). The image is taken from Joshua Hamilton's expanded edition of Nicholas Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792 by W. Locke. The Lanc d Gentle Thistle, also known as the Common Thistle, is depicted on the left side of the print. Its distinctive spiky leaves and purple flower heads are in full bloom, revealing the intricate details of its structure. Thistles were once believed to have medicinal properties, particularly for treating wounds and inflammation. The milky sap was used topically to soothe pain and draw out splinters. On the right side of the print, the Burdock plant is illustrated. Its tall, hairy stem and large, heart-shaped leaves are easily recognizable. Burdock was used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including skin conditions, digestive issues, and as a diuretic. The plant's roots were believed to have the most medicinal properties and were often roasted and consumed as a food or used to make a tea. The intricate details of these plants are beautifully captured in this copperplate engraving, which showcases the artistry and dedication of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the time. This print is a testament to the rich history of herbal medicine and the importance of documenting the natural world for both medicinal and scientific purposes.
