EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Christina, Duchess of Teschen, also known as Mimi (1742-1798), was a prominent figure in the Austrian aristocracy during the 18th century. Born into the powerful House of Habsburg-Lorraine, she held the significant position of Governor of the Austrian Netherlands from 1781 until 1793. In this elegant portrait, the Duchess is depicted in a seated position, adorned in the latest fashion of the time. She wears an ornate headdress, adorned with delicate feathers and jewels, and holds a fan in her right hand. A large, colorful necklace and earrings add to her regal appearance. The Duchess's age is suggested by the subtle lines on her face and the grey in her hair, yet her poised posture and piercing gaze convey a sense of youthful vitality. The background of the portrait is simple, with a plain wall and a small table with a vase of flowers, drawing the focus to the Duchess herself. This engraving, taken from the Historia Universal published in 1885, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Austrian nobility during the late 18th century. The Duchess's title and significance are clearly indicated by her regal attire and the modern, refined style of the portrait.
