EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the Roaring Twenties, we find the tall and dapper William Greville Worthington (1903-1942) and his petite bride, Mary Diana Duncombe (1905-1943), moments after their wedding ceremony at the historic St. Margaret's Church in Westminster on May 31, 1927. The striking contrast between their heights adds an intriguing element to this elegant scene, with Worthington's imposing stature towering over his diminutive spouse. The couple, both members of high society, would go on to have four children together. However, their marriage was not to last, as they divorced in 1942. Tragically, just a few months after their separation, Worthington was shot by a sentry while attempting to enter Buckingham Palace without proper identification. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but it is believed that he may have been suffering from mental health issues at the time. Meanwhile, Worthington's ex-wife, Diana, was left to grapple with the loss of her husband and the challenges of raising their children as a single mother. Her grief proved to be overwhelming, and in October of the same year, she took her own life. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and uncertainties that can accompany the most profound of human connections. The image captures the essence of the 1920s, with its ornate bridal attire, opulent setting, and the undeniable allure of a bygone era. The story of Greville and Diana Worthington and their tragic marriage is a testament to the enduring power of love, loss, and the inexorable passage of time.
