EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Muhammad al-Idrisi (1100-1166 AD), a renowned Moroccan Arab Muslim scholar, geographer, cartographer, and Egyptologist. Born in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the North African coast, al-Idrisi spent a significant portion of his life in Palermo, Sicily, at the court of King Roger II. Al-Idrisi is best known for his seminal work, "The Book of Roger," also referred to as "The Geography of Muhammad al-Idrisi," which is considered one of the most accurate and comprehensive maps of the known world during the Middle Ages. The map, which is based on the works of earlier geographers and al-Idrisi's own extensive travels and research, covers Europe, Africa, and Asia. The intricately detailed map, which is believed to have been completed around 1154 AD, was a groundbreaking achievement in cartography, as it was the first to use a grid system and to accurately depict the shape of Africa. It also included information on climate, topography, and political divisions, making it an invaluable resource for navigators, traders, and explorers. Al-Idrisi's work was not only significant for its cartographic achievements but also for its contributions to the fields of geography and geology. He was one of the first scholars to systematically study the geology of different regions, noting the presence of minerals, mountains, and other geological features. This stunning print captures the intellectual curiosity and scholarly achievements of Muhammad al-Idrisi, a man whose work bridged the gap between the Islamic and European worlds, and whose legacy continues to inspire and inform our understanding of the world today.
