EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Ceylon variety of the Mugger crocodile (Crocodylus palustris), also known as the Marsh crocodile, and the Saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). The image is taken from Dr. George Shaw's seminal work, "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801. The illustration was created by Shaw himself, with the engraving executed by Heath. The Ceylon crocodile, as depicted in this print, is native to the island of Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon. This powerful and ancient reptile is shown in its natural habitat, basking in the sun on the banks of a tranquil body of water. Its scaled body glistens in the sunlight, and its sharp teeth and piercing eyes convey a sense of both beauty and danger. The Mugger crocodile, which is also found in the Indian subcontinent, is distinguished from the Saltwater crocodile by its smaller size and more slender snout. The Saltwater crocodile, the largest living reptile, is renowned for its incredible strength and agility in water. Both species are apex predators and play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems. This exquisite print, with its intricate details and vibrant colours, offers a glimpse into the natural history of these magnificent creatures and the scientific curiosity of the early 19th century. It is a testament to the artistry and dedication of Dr. Shaw and the skill of the engraver Heath, who brought this image to life over two centuries ago.
