EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image depicts the poignant moment when the corpse of Hector, the legendary Trojan prince, is brought back into the city of Troy after the Greeks' victory in the Trojan War. The Trojan soldiers, wearing helmets that resemble Phrygian caps, carry Hector's body on a shield, while Priam, the King of Troy, kneels at the left side of the print, deeply mourning the loss of his beloved son. Hector's wife Andromache and their young son Astyanax are seen at the right, also in a state of grief. The queen Hecuba and other women are depicted behind them, consoling them and joining in the mourning. The scene is taken from a bas-relief on a sarcophagus and was hand-colored in a copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri for Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1847. The intricate details of the soldiers' armor, weapons, and the horse-drawn chariot in the background add to the historical and artistic significance of this powerful image.
