EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 249 features the Hymenopteran species Ceraphron halidayi, now more commonly known as Dendrocerus halidayi. The insect, a member of the Apocritan family, can be seen delicately perched on the petals of a Meadow Vetchling (Lathyrus pratensis) plant. John Curtis, the esteemed naturalist and botanist, was the driving force behind this comprehensive publication, which showcased over 4,000 different species of insects. The meticulously detailed illustrations, produced under the supervision of the skilled botanical artist John Fleming, were a testament to the dedication and expertise of the time. The Hymenoptera order, to which Ceraphron halidayi belongs, is characterized by the presence of wings covered with membranes, and Ceraphron species are typically parasitic wasps. This particular species is known for its distinctive appearance, with a slender body and long legs. The intricate patterns on its wings and the delicate veining are beautifully captured in this print. The Meadow Vetchling, a common plant found in meadows and damp grasslands, provides the perfect backdrop for this striking image. Its delicate pink and white flowers add a touch of elegance to the composition, while the contrasting textures of the insect and the plant create a visually appealing interplay. This print offers a glimpse into the natural world of the 1820s and 1830s, showcasing the intricate beauty of a little-known insect species and the delicate charm of a common meadow plant. The attention to detail and the high-quality illustration make this an essential addition to any collection of natural history prints.
