EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the enchanting Dance of the Dervishes from the Kadri Order, as captured in Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1842. The image is a reproduction from Ignace Mouradgea d'Ohsson's "Tableau General de L'Empire Ottoman," published in Paris in 1790. The scene takes place in the private quarters of an Ottoman official, with a divan and ornate carpet adorning the room. Windows provide a glimpse of the outside world, while the official, dressed in a turban and robe, sits on the divan, observing the dance with a sense of reverence. The Dervishes, members of the Kadri Order, are shown in various stages of the whirling dance, their long robes swirling around them as they spin in a trance-like state. The dance, known as the "Sama," is a spiritual practice intended to bring the dervishes closer to Allah. The intricate details of the engraving, from the intricately patterned robes to the ornate furnishings, provide a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of Ottoman court life. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning historical illustration of Islamic culture and tradition.
