EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles" published by F.G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, showcases two fascinating marine species: the Ornate Wrasse, Thalassoma pavo, and the Bogue, Boops boops. The illustration, directed by Turpin and engraved by Massard under the skilled brushstrokes of Jean Gabriel Pretre, was created during Pretre's tenure as painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later as artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Ornate Wrasse, also known as the Five-line Wrasse or the Hippolyte Wrasse, is depicted in vibrant colors with intricate patterns on its body. This reef-dwelling fish is native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans and is known for its striking appearance and ability to change colors based on its surroundings. The Bogue, or Oblique Bogue, is illustrated alongside the Ornate Wrasse. This small, round fish is characterized by its dark, vertical stripes and protruding lower jaw. The Bogue is a common sight in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea and is an important food source for many coastal communities. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the natural history illustrations produced during the early 19th century. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique allowed for a high level of detail and depth, making this image a valuable addition to any collection of historical marine illustrations.
